The truth about focal points.

The definition of Focal points is :

The focal point of something is the thing that people concentrate on or pay most attention to. It is imperative to have focal points in your design, I am stating that as a plural, focal points.

One of the largest misconceptions about focal points is that there is one focal point typically in the center of a wall, or in the middle of the space. Focal points need to be treated the same as an artist would in a painting.

Asymmetric

Example when looking at famous paintings like Scream or even the Mona Lisa, it is important to the artist that they keep the eye moving over the entire painting. Keeping a certain amount of asymmetrical color or tree lines. Nothings is balanced or even or centered. If everything was centered, even and balanced they eye would stop at one focal point and not travel the painting or room in Interior Design.

In the living room below, the focal points are

the three paintings on the left wall,

the single painting over the sofa asymmetrical on the right

Adding pops of color on either side of the sofa, makes your eye’s move around the room.

The rules of 3

Quite frankly one of the oldest rules in Interior Design that has never lost steam. The rule is not based on anything trendy,(although, playing a large role in Feng shui) it is based on science and how we see things. So even though rules come and go… this one will not. It’s pretty simple: The guideline of threes say that things arranged in odd numbers are more appealing, memorable, and effective than even-numbered groupings. Three seems to be *the* magic number, but 5, 7, or 9 work nicely as well.¬†What is it about the odd numbers? Apparently, it’s just how our lovely brains work. For one, three is the smallest number that can be used to form a distinguishable pattern in our heads. Also, when you see an odd number of things, your eye is forced to move around more, which makes for a more interesting visual experience.
